Eric:
Short horror story on that subject. In the process of installing a 1725cc
used engine in my Series IV I noticed that the slots on top of the
distributor drive gear on the oil pump shaft were badly worn - so undaunted
I mounted the gear from another oil pump which was among my spare parts.
The gear looked exactly the same as the worn one.
Later when it came time to start up the new installation the engine would
fire occasionally on one cylinder and then wait a few revs before firing
again - on one cylinder! The engine just would not run. To make a very
long and frustrating story short - the drive gear for 1725 cc's has one
more (or maybe one less - I can't remember which) spiral gear than the 1600
cc drive gear with the result that the distributor was rotating just
slightly off the right speed and would only 'now and then' fire a plug at
the right moment. Needless to say a lot of useless labour went into
tracking down the problem, pulling the pan and pump, and COUNTING THE DAMNED
SPIRALS ON THE GEARS.
I don't know if the rest of the oil pump is interchangable or not - but I
can assure you that drive gear is not! Moral of the story - just because
parts look the same at a quick glance - don't assume they are. Count the
confounded spirals!!!!! (I guess helical is the right word - not spiral?)
Good Luck,
Barrie.
PS Looking over Anthony Robertson's response to your question reminds me
that I was only able to assemble that mess because I was also using the
wrong distributor with the mechanical tach drive. All in all a total screw-up!!
