Your deductions seem to make sense although I have never heard of a
brake switch shorting to ground but ????
If you remove the switch, you will lose some fluid, but it will not
come gushing out, so be quick.

By the way, you seem to have gone through a few fuses; if you had
replaced the fuse with a lamp, the lamp would have illuminated
indicating that, had a fuse been there, it would have blown. (Just a
comment)
