The standard country garage way to tighten front wheel bearing nuts, which
I have been using for years in a number of different cars without any
problems, is to tighten toe nut by hand until you start to feel a little
tightness. Then get the appropriate sized wrench and snug it up (not much
more than by hand, but it does tighten the bearing and remove a little
extra slack). Then back the nut off to the next position for inserting the
split pin. That's all there is to it.....my Healey and Alpine are many year
testaments to this procedure.
