The play in the front end could also be due to worn cross-tube bushings, or
the steering box itself could need new bushings (especially if its been a
leaker for some time).

If you remove shims from the top of the steering box, the play should
decrease, but steering effort will probably increase even faster. Start with
the thinnest shims.

A good front-end shop should be able to trace the slack to the guilty
component(s). However, even in top condition the Alpine box will show SOME
slack; its probably the main reason that our cars never had a reputation for
precise steering.
