I have been having trouble with my battery draining off over a few days, so
last night I checked out the charging system.
First I had to change the wiring of the ammeter, the DPO had struck again.
After checking tech tips at the web site, I was able to wire the ammeter
correctly.
Next, working from the Rootes light car range manual:
1. fan belt tension is ok
2. battery was fully charged
Connected the 'F' and '-' leads from the voltage regulator, started the car,
and brought the RPM up to 4000. No output from the alternator at all. I checked
the 6RA relay (field isolating relay) and it was working fine. Connected the
'C1' and 'C2' terminals and redid the test on the alternator, again no current.
Reconnected all the leads.
Checked the voltage at the battery: 12V. Started the car and let it run at
3000 RPM for about 10 minutes. Checked the voltage at the battery again:
11.5V. Tried adjusting the pot on the regulator and saw no change in the
voltage at the battery, read a steady 11.5V. The manual indicates that the
problem is the voltage regulator. However I am still concerned about the
alternator being dead since no output from the alternator was seen on any test.
I hope to get a new regulator tonight or this weekend. But before I install
it I want to be sure this is the problem.
Has anybody else had experience with this kind of problem?
