Quick test:

Disconnect the field wire to the alternator. With engine running (idle
or a little above should do it), and voltmeter on battery or somewhere
where you can watch bettery/alternator voltage, temporarily connect a
wire from the battery(fuse box etc??) to the field terminal (be careful
not to touch metal objects). As you make contact you should see a
noticable difference in the alternator output voltage. If you do, the
alternator is OK.

What you have just done is to bypass the reguklator and relay, and
connected the alternator for max output.
