Power Steering

Richard Atherton was enquiring about power steering on Humbers. The
system used was a type called Hydrosteer. It was not in the steering
box but a ram replaced the centre track rod, with the outer tie rods
connected to the case of the ram, the steering box drop arm connected
to the driver's side end of the ram case and the ram piston rod
connected to the passenger side chassis. Movement of the steering arm
activated the hydraulic valve which pressurised either side of the
piston, causing the case to move left or right and steering the car.
The steering box used was still the same unit (Burman recirculating
ball) used on standard cars. Hydrosteer was an option on Super Snipes
from 1959 to 1967 and standard on Series V Snipes(home models) and
Imperials. The Hydrosteer system was also used on some Commer and
     Karrier trucks as an option.
I hope this clarifies the system, but can not see it working on an
     Alpine or Tiger.
