What about wire wheels? Do the same tire sizes apply to wires as to solid
wheels? I have never owned a car with true wire wheels before but made
sure when I had the choice between the two Alpines I picked the one with the
wires. I understand the the wire wheels require a tubed tire, does that
limit my choices in tires?Any info appreciated!

***** NOTES from Jay Laifman (JLAIFMAN (at) PNM) at 10/17/96 12:14p
I have wire wheels as well - after swapping from another Series V I used
to have. Yes, they need tubes. I don't know if tubes are available for
any size tire, but I image that for the tires available to fit the stock
wheel and within the wheel wells, the standard inner tube will fit.

I understand that the width of the rim for the wires on all cars is/was
4.5 inches. But note that the hubs cause the wheels to be pushed out
slightly - that is, the front track on the wire wheels is 1/4" wider than
stock steel rims, and the rear is 2" wider - which I believe improves the
look of the otherwise sunken in wheels.

Lastly, the wheels are identical to the wheels on the Midget/Sprite (but
not the Spitfire). So, parts and replacement wheels are out there if
necessary. Also, I understand that the wheels for the later Midget/Sprite
were made stronger than those available in '67 and before, and therefore
make a good upgrade with the exact same appearance.
