Hey Alpine Dudes and "Dudetts",

Last night I got my newly ordered crankshaft damper pully from Sunbeam
Specialties.

My old one had cracked and the pully as well as the timing cover had
disintegrated "literaly".

The pully is a high quality reproduction of the original, but the
material has been changed to a more durable form of iron.

The damper looks great, and came with a writeup, that should assure a long
life for the damper.

This is a short generalization to what was printed, and may help others who
screwed up "or who will eventually" during assembly as I did.

1) An O-ring is used on the inside lip of the timing cover that keeps the
oil that drips down the timing cover from getting on the damper scrolls
"lessens leakage".

This one got me, as I have a 1725 engine and an early shop manual. The
early engines do not have the O-Ring as the lips are shaped differently.

2) Use a layer of masking tape around the scroll section of the damper,
so that the pully can be used as a locating device. Install the damper into
position in the timing cover. Tighten the timing cover as normal. Remove
damper and remove tape.
Reinstal damper.

3) Tighten damper retaining bolt to 150 lb ft "key point here".

These tips should allow you to use your damper for many more years.

KEEP EM TIGHT!
