Thanks for the explanation.  I will resist asking you about the chevy 350 
rod conversion.  My reaction would be that the 1750 engine was used in a 
lot of cars; if there were a problem with rod bolts, I would think the 
factory would have changed them pretty quickly.  But who knows.  The 
mechanic who did my 948 Sprite engine pitched all the rod bolts (soft, he 
said), pitched the locking tabs (how can you torque something with soft 
metal crap under the head?), and put in grade 8 bolts torqued to specs.  
It is still together.
