Lauri,

The stock bolts are not too weak, but please read on.
I know personally of 4 people in the last several years, who have had thier
motors chew up rods and pistons and other neat engine parts, and through
them out the block. The common denominator seams to be something to do with
the rod/bolts.
Since the rods appear to be of good design "steel" and the bearings are of
modern materials, broken bolts and walking bearing caps appear to me the
most likely source of grief.
Keep in mind here that the failures that I am speaking of have happened on
the track.
I believe that the stock design is quite up to the wear and tear of stock
driving demands.
I however as well as others, push these motors well beyond the norm in an
attempt to remain competitive in one way or another.
Personally I have spent nearly $1500 dollars "US" to build up my engine up
to what it is now. I will likely spend more on this motor before it does
exactly what I need it to do.
Because of the shear expense in the proper building and maintainance of a
high performance alpine, I have opted to consider any part that would insure
that my motor will not fail.
I consider it like having an insurance policy, only I insure myself.
I pay say 20% more to build the motor as best I can, then I will worry alot
less about it while I shift the motor at 6500 RPM.
If you plan to push your motor really hard as some of us do, you could do a
whole lot worse than spend an extra 50 or 100 bucks during the buildup of
the motor.
If you just plan to drive your car and have fun, do exactly that. Replace
the rod bolts with stock parts at each rebuild, and you should enjoy many
years of trouble free operation.
