Start up woes Sears Die-Hard

Thanks for the advice on adjusting strombergs. Past few days I noticed
sulfuric smell emanating while driving. At first thought I had the
strombergs too rich but it was in fact sulfuric acid overflowing from 6 month
old Sears Die-Hard battery. Label said maintenance free - when I opened the
covers (idiot me: maint. free, w/ covers?) I noticed not a drop of H20
inside. Replaced the battery under warranty and had electrical system
checked for possible overcharging. In fact, the ammeter indicated 13 amps
charging at about 16 volts with a peak charging of 28 amps. The Sears guy
said normal chargins should be 40 to 60 amps. That seems way too high for a
simple Lucas 1967 system.

After I got home with my new replacement Die Hard, I check it out and noticed
liquid around battery covers? Is it happening again? I dried out any will
find out manana.

Has anybody had this type of problem before? I did hear (maybe from this
list) that Die Hard quality is much worse since Johnson Controls stopped
making them. What is the battery of choice for the sunbeam?
