My 1962 Alpine Series 2 has a non-functional overdrive - which I am
told is not an unusual state for such a device. As the rear axle
ratio is so high (numerically) and the air cleaners :- are so loud
(decibelly) the car is unpleasant to drive.
Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be? The switch will
activate the solenoid. When the overdrive engages?? the car
freewheels on coast, but when I apply throttle it simply shifts back
into underdrive. When I disengage the switch the car functions as it
should. Is it an oil pressure problem or what? I would appreciate
any suggestions.

My MGB overdrive works fine (providing the oil doesn't all leak out
through a cocked washer while on a long trip).
