This is a classic problem - the manual states that it could be "worn or
glazed clutch (in OD unit) linings" or"broken circlip on sun wheel"
(inside unit. Im sure that there are other problems that can cause
this. Did the problem develop or happen suddenly?
I had this problem and it was so bad that I couldnt even drive in
reverse.
Either way, it probably means a teardown, assuming you have enough oil
etc. There is a conical clutch that is supposed to lock some gears up
with OD engeged. If this slips funny things happen.
If you are mechanically confident, they are not too hard to take apart.
Some care is needed on reassembly and there are somne notes in the
manual that MUST be adhered to re positioning of the planet gears..
Parts could be a bit harsd to find, but until you have it apart you
wont know.
I assume that you have not let it get low on oil at some time, as this
WILL KILL the unit, causing interesting internal mechanical failures to
some gears and bearings.
Ther is a guy in the UK with mix and match rebuilds but he wont
mailorder. Maybe someone knows on parts in the US?????/
If you need more, email me.
Good luck
John
