I had a similar experience with my series V. In my case, it was the
ballast resistor which had slid in the bracket and the positive side
contacted the bracket. Fortunately, my instinct was to shut the car
off at the first sign of smoke and this stopped the current from
flowing. However, the wire was flaming and trying to start the
insulation on fire under the dash. Its a good thing that I'm so full
of hot air as I got to keep my Sunbeam in an uncooked state. I
reccomend that all of you check to make sure that your ballast
resistors are good and tight in the brackets. Some heat shrink
tubing over the bare connectors is good too.
