Older Model Sunbeam Owners,
I am in the process of rebuilding another 2267cc engine and
have just noticed a contradiction in the shop manual when it comes
to assembling the connecting rods to the pistons.
Page 42 - quote....
"...the numbers (cylinders 1-4) being stamped on the outside
of the upper and lower halves of the big endon the side which is
*away from the camshaft*, i.e., to the right-hand side of the engine
as viewed from the rear."
(next paragraph)
"The pistons are numbered 1 to 4 from the front of the engine
and they must be fitted to the appropriate connecting rods so that
the split sides of the piston skirts are all to the *left hand side
of the engine as viewed from the rear*."
(*'s indicate italicized text)
Page 48 - quote.....
"There are several important conditions to be observed
additionally:-
        (a) The piston must be assembled so that non-split (plain)
side is adjacent to the oil jet hole in the connecting
            rod."

ASCII Drawing of Assembly as Removed From Engine (agrees with page
48 above).

The pistons are marked "FRONT" on top so there is no
way to misinterpret which way they are oriented.
The above arrangement, which was as removed from the engine,
contradicts the Page 42 statement by placing rod numbers on wrong
side (same side as camshaft, not away from).
If I have the pistons assembled as per the instructions on
Page 42, this contradicts instructions on page 48 (oil hole
location must be on the opposite side from the split on the piston).
If you have been patient enough to follow my rambling
explanation to this point, I could solve the problem easily if I
knew the purpose for the small pin sized oil hole on the big end
of the rod. From its location, it would appear to squirt oil onto
the cylinder wall. Now should it hit the inside split side of the
piston or the solid (thrust) side?
I assembled another engine (same type) last year and
reversed the connecting rod from what is shown above by
following the page 42 instructions, not noticing the contradicting
instructions on page 48.
Thanks for any assistance.
Bob
