On another car group I am on, there is a thread going with everyone
introducing themselves. It's kind of a neat thing. Many are coming out
of their lurk mode to tell about their cars, racing experience, hobbies,
jobs, and whatever else they want. So, I thought I'd start one here:
As many already know, I have owned my 1967 Sunbeam Alpine for 17 years and
just finished restoring it, and rebuilding the engine to Holbay specs,
including dual Webers, hot cam, etc., to 125/135 hp (a guestimate by the
guy who built it - no real evidence yet) - which is more hp per pound than
a stock Tiger - gotta like that. I have other German metal that will
still toast my Alpine. But, usually I just need that 4 banger English
roadster feel.
I got into cars because my dad is into cars. In the 50's he raced his MG
TC, Jaguar XK120, Porsche 356B (each purchased new, and each long gone).
He then traded in the 356 for a 1967 911S, also gone. We also built a kit
car together which looks like a Pantera with the whole roof, windshield
and side windows as a one piece canopy that lifts on hydraulics like a
fighter plane, and with a Fiero GT V6 engine (he bought and drove the
Alpine while we built the kit car 18 years ago). He still has the
kit car. I used to listen to all his "stories" about his racing days.
They were fun. But, it wasn't until I read "The Last Open Road" that I
realized they were all really true! (Great book, a must read). I'm sorry
to say, but he now drives a Tiger.
I am a real estate transactional attorney. I assist clients in buying,
selling, managing, and financing warehouses, offices, shopping centers,
hotels, and homes. Sure I generate a lot of paper. But, the way I look
at it, I help people get buildings for other people to work in. No matter
what, it's a heck of a lot better than the litigation world I started in
(for me anyway).
I'd love to figure out a way to make real money in connection with internal
combustion powered motor cars - EV1 notwithstanding. The "neatest" places
always seem to be those classic car dealers with all the beautiful cars on
the lot. But, then the reality is that they are just salesmen with a
product to sell, and I have never seen such a lot last more than 5 years.
Best for last, I am married to Barbara (formerly Salzman) Laifman, have a
3 year old Bridget, and have another on the way, due February 18, 1997. I
am 33, lived in Palos Verdes, Calif, Highland Park, Ill., San Fernando
Valley, Calif, then undergrad at UC Santa Cruz (now there is a trip), and
law school at Hastings in San Francisco. Other than cars, mountain biking
is my passion.
