Hi Ray,

You may still be on the right track.

First, the nut size. The original flats size may well have been 1 1/4", but
most people who have removed them in the past have not had the correct
socket, so have used things like vise grips and hammers, cold chisels and
hammers, etc which end up spreading the metal somewhat so that a slightly
larger socket is required. My particular crank bolt had had the cold chisel
treatment. The 34mm socket had a very small amount of play, but did the job
perfectly.

On the depth of socket required. On one engine I stripped for parts, a
previous owner had obviously decided that the starter lug was never going
to be used again, so it had been sawn off. Of course, a shallow socket is
all that is required to remove this modified bolt.
