Wow Gale - you sure kicked up a 'storm' (pardon the expression) with your question about re' and re'ing the crankshaft pulley!
I'm no shadetree mechanic - but I can remember several occasions when it was very handy to have those starter lugs (provided, of course, you have a crank handle) to turn the engine over very slowly to get to TDC on #1 - the starter goes so fast it's difficult to get to just the right spot - when reinstalling a distributor for example - you know - where you have to get that offset slot in the top of the drive dog on the oil-pump at just the right angle to pop in the distributor. [I installed one once with the offset on the wrong side - it 'accepted' the incorrect installation - but within a few miles it wrecked the distributor and the drive dog!]
I'm just suggesting you not be too quick to saw the lugs off - they might come in handy some time when your Prince of Darkness distributor craps out - which it surely will.
[As for you Tony - shame on you for suggesting Gale cut the lugs off! Does this MEAN your Alpine is not 100% stock? Is it missing it's two genetic buck teeth?]
Cheers

P.S. Gale, for a small fee I will tell you how to know when you are at TDC in #1. Can't remember if I read it on the Alpines page or in a manual - doesn't matter - it works.
