Well, I for one can confirm that not only Rootes cars were equipped
with crank handles. For one, my Sunbeam camper (aka Commer van) has a hole
and tube lined up with the crank for a starter handle, and a properly lugged
bolt to boot. However, I do not have the required handle... it would have to
be about a foot or more longer than the Alpine handle, as the engine is
rather far back, between the seats in the cab. On the non-Rootes front, my 58
MG Magnette has a very elaborate crank handle, that incorporates an upright
brace that sits in a vertical hole in the bumper.
For a personal experience, my 66 SerVs starter decided not to crank
one day. Oh, yes, I forgot to mention I was the first car in line on a
drawbridge, and the bridge was almost down! Needless to say, a LOT of other
drivers were quite glad that I had an alternate method of starting the
car.!!!
Just my 2 centimos worth, YMMV
