Hi Lance,

I saw Kevin Meek's response to your problem this morning, and thought I
would add my two bits worth. I presently have a S IV more or less in bits
in my basemnent, so I took a look at the windshield/door fit. My windshield
is loose, with no rubber seal, caulking or shims etc underneath it. There
is maybe a 1 degree misalignment, which seems easily correctable during
proper installation, or with the rubber seal which goes down the back of
the windshield upright.

Before the whole newsgroup gets on my back, I know that S I and SII have a
different windshield/door/roof set-up than do S III and later, and that is
the reason for this note. I have a complete set-up for the S II in my
garage, and I found out about the different design the hard way, when this
S IV I purchased came with the S II set-up (including the hard top). There
is approximately a 2 inch difference, fore and aft, in the position of the
top of the windshield in the two designs, and my thoughts are that you
have somehow incorporated S III or later doors with a S II windshield, or
vice-versa, during your rebuild. If you have exchanged the windshield for a
later one, you probably had to slightly reposition the front centre
windshield mounting hole, which doesn't quite line up in the two versions,
although the rest of the mounting holes are the same. The later doors have
the small fitted triangular window at the front, rather than the complete
roll-up style of earlier cars. This triangle gives an instant read-out of
"wrong" when mated to the wrong windshield.

There was a series of messages on this topic some months ago on this newsgroup.

Keep restoring those Alpines. John S.
