"I have a major problem with my wheels and hubs. The splines are worn such
that all 4 wheels clunk with braking. I know the problem is in the hubs
because I wrapped them with aluminum foil as a shim and the clunk went
away (for a little while). I can get new wire wheels but getting new hubs
is going to be more difficult. Does anyone know of a source for the
splined hubs on a Series II car. Is it possible to have the old ones
recut? I am hoping that I wont have to replace my wires with bolt on
wheels."

Here is a question/thought. I bought brand new wheels for my car some
time back. The splines on the hubs "look" clean. I had some knock and
was worried about the splines. Then I read about lubricating the threads
and mating surfaces so that the knock off can get hit on hard enough
without binding metal to metal. After I did that, the noise went away for
some period of time only to come back - until I tighten them again. My
question is then, do I have bad hubs too? Or, were you just experiencing
what I am experiencing, i.e., that the spinners do come loose on their own
(even though I was previously convinced that the rotational forces keep
the wheels tight). Maybe your noise went away because you just happened
to tighten them and then they worked their way loose again - or at least
loose enough for the clunk.

Anyone else?
