So, if you are planning long distance motorway cruising - this is what
you need. My experience with this set-up is great and I say go for it!!

I can wholeheartedly agree! When I first put an OD trans in my SerV, I did it
the "correct" way, and changed the final drive as well. I was less than
impressed. After a few calculations and a few long trips, I decided to put
the original final drive back in, and BOY, did it make a difference! 60mph in
OD top is about 2700rpm, on a tach calibrated to be accurate at 4000rpm. The
problem with factory tachs, is that you can only make a single adjustment, so
you can make it accurate only in one part of it's range.
This car will cruise all day long at 75mph, and not even breathe hard.
I drove it from NJ to Colorado for the 89 SUNI and back again, and never
missed a beat. Absolutely wonderful!

PS. Now if I could just fit OD to my camper... OE rear was 5.63 to 1!

My .02 worth - I checked my Brooklands book last night and the Series
III road reports both indicate 17.2 mph at 1000rpm with Std.
transmission and 21.4 mph at 1000rpm with O/D . Both tests running on
6.00 - 13 tyres! The Series III was the only Series with a 3.89 rear
end for both overdrive and std. transmission. This means at 3000 rpm
with O/D and a 3.89 rear end, you should be ripping along at 64.2 mph.
So, if you are planning long distance motorway cruising - this is what
you need. My experience with this set-up is great and I say go for it!!
