Yes, excessive cooling system pressure do to head gasket leaking could be
the problem. Hot spots can also cause excessive pessure. An overflow tank
helps this as well.

Considering the recent antedotes on Sunbeam temperature gauge inaccuracy I
would definitely get a second opinion on the water temp.
