I have a set of rebuilt Zeniths in my Series II car that currently
has a Series V motor. I had new throttle shafts made and the plates
bushed with teflon so that I could keep the car as original looking as
possible. I found a set of 30 mm choke tubes that has let the bigger
motor breath better. I am quite happy with the performance as I am able
to accelerate up the steep side of the San Luis reservoir grade passing
all the other slower more modern cars. I have never had a Weber on the
car, so I can't compare performance.
My understanding of the difference between WIA and WIP carbs is
that one of them had a power valve and the other didn't. This valve is
supposed to open up under hard acceleration to allow more gas through the
circuit. I don't think you can get the power valves any more, and
besides, the racing specs call for blanking off the valves as I don't
think that they really worked all that well. Most cars have had the
valves blanked off years ago.
You can check to see how much air is leaking past your throttle
shafts by squirting water around the shafts at the base of the carbs while
the car is running. If your engine idle drops, you have and air leak. If
you can't adjust your idle screws to get a good low idle, you have a big
leak. An inexpensive fix that I used for a long time is to remove the
throttle shafts and wrap the ends with teflon tape (the stuff that
plumbers use). The tape is not digested by gas and will also help the
linkage rotate. I also used the tape to seal the shafts from the
accelerator accuating levers as I had a lot of gas spilling out the top of
the carberators through these gaps.
Another alternative is to use the weber ICT carberator off of the
Volkswagen. A friend of mine bolted them right up to his stock manifold
and is reportedly getting 30 miles to the gallon. (Or at least he was.
The car is currently laid up due to clutch problems.)
