Tim,
I'm *ultra* new at owning 'em! I've had my car nearly three weeks now.
As I understand it (thanks Jarrid) pressing the clutch in pushes the
crankshaft forward in the block, causing it to press on the thrust washer
which is usually lubricated by engine oil. If you start the car with your
foot on the clutch, you are pushing the crank against the trust washer and
spinning it before the engine oil has had a chance to get there to lubricate
things.
Feel free to correct me if I am leading Tim up the garden path.
Cheers,
Paul.

Paul,
I'm kind of a novice at owning an Alpine. I've never heard of the "never
start with the clutch in" rule. Can you explain? I don't want to do anything
that would cause me to replace the throw out bearing. I'm lazy that way ;-)
