Think of it this way -- does it really make any sense to suppose that
a thermostat will make the engine run warmer in winter by
restricting flow and will also make the engine run cooler in summer by
restricting flow?

The thermostat's job is to MAINTAIN the engine temperature - in the
winter, the thermostat can eliminate flow - by closing. In the summer, it
will be open most of the time. That's the whole idea.... temperature
regulation by flow control, as designed by the manufacturer. If you have a
cooling system problem, fix it. If the car can't maintain the temp of the
thermostat, SOMETHING is wrong. Maybe the rad is clogged up. Maybe the fan
has lost it's pitch. Maybe the timing is off. MANY factors effect the cooling
system. Don't try to second-guess the engineers who build the engines....
EVERY modern engine uses a thermostat. There is no way to regulate the
system without one.
my 2 cents worth.......
