Yes, Alpines are a little different in that the throwout bearing is made
of
such short lived material "Carbon/Graphite", and the bearing itself
sacrifices
itself to the clutch cover.
Any engine that uses thrust bearings to locate the crank will have some
ill effects if the engine is started whilest the clutch is in due to oil
starvation
at startup.
I dont want to start a big debate over this issue, but in most cases,
the potential damage is probably negligable. With the Alpine however
I believe it is not negligable as is clearly seen by the drop in RPMs.
