Problems of this kind are not rare. The electronics are 30+ years old
and not as robust as today's electronic components.

They can be fixed, and common problems are leaky capacitor , an out of
spec thermister or dirty variable resistor that is used to set the
calibration. These components are inside the can, which comes apart
quite easily.

I have a schematic which I can look for if its needed, and not
available on the net.
