Some things come to mind.
Did your check the meshing patterns of the two gears
after you bolted it all in?
Were the gears worn?
How were the bearings "wheel bearings too".
Shims are changed to adjust the mesh pattern, some on the pinion shaft,
and some on the ring carrier.
Also the shims on the ring carrier set the carrier bearing pre-load,
if too loose you are in for a real howl.
I would not abandon the alpine rear just yet, it is one of the best
designed parts on the alpine.
