Messy oil change, tacho, Alpine on TV

Hi all,
My Alpine-related activities at the weekend were restricted to a short drive
to
warm up the car, followed by a *very* messy oil change.

Does someone want to let me in on the secret then? How do I replace the oil
filter cartrige (canister type, not disposable type) without sending oil
cascading
down the side of the block and mostly missing the catch tray I had under the
car?
My workshop manual says 'on earlier models there is a drain plug at the base
of
the filter mounting block', but it doesn't say what to do if you have a
'later' car like
mine without such a drain plug.

I know some will say 'change to a disposable filter', but I really just want
to get the
car sorted and ready for our warmer weather (in Australia). I will keep my
eyes
open for a spin-on filter adapter, but it's not a priority just now.

BTW - back to the tacho thread - my tacho is cable driven off the
distributor shaft.
Perhaps RHD cars were cable drive & LHD cars were electronic? Mine doesn't
look like a PO bodge, and a fellow Sunbeam club member said words to the
effect of, "Yeah, of course it's cable driven", so I suspect it's meant to
be that way.

Another BTW - we have an ad running on TV here at the moment that has an
Alpine
in it! I'm yet to see the ad, but several people have told me about it. I'll
try to tape it.

Cheers,
Paul.
