Kurt:
I got a big improvement in my '67 Series V just changing from the stock
4 blade steel fan (which almost killed me when a blade flew off and
severed the oil cooler line and cut a 1" chunk in the crossmember!). Get
rid of that thing and install a 6 blade plastic fan, as big as possible
without hitting the rack. The airflow is dramatically increased. I got a
20 degree (at least) improvement from that, and then went to a 4 row
radiator which did the trick.
To answer your question re: Did they run cool from the facory, the
answer is no, not in my experience. When my Alpine was brand new in
1967, it used to spit out coolant in stop and go driving in warm weather
here in southern California, and was hard to re-start when warm. The
cooling setup was, I think, designed for the UK and cooler climes. I was
never able to completely solve the problem until the above two mods.
Also, check your timing. If it's too far advanced, this can add to the
heat.
Good luck.
