I too have a couple of similar stories. To start, though, here are a
couple of other Sunbeam bits: I was hooked on Sunbeams by seeing James
Bond drive an Alpine in "Dr. No". I'm pretty sure the car that chased
him and his Alpine up that mountain road was a Humber. Rent that film!
(Another Humber reference: Sparks, a great rock/pop goup from the 70's,
did an album called "Propaganda". One of the best guitar rock/pop/vocals
album of all times, if you're into that. The inner sleeve showed the
Mael brothers, who were primarily what made up Sparks, tied together and
gagged on a bed, obviously having been kidnapped. The back cover showed
them in the same state, ready to be tossed off a speed boat. And here's
the Sunbeam content, the front cover has them, again in the same state,
tossed into the back seat of a beautiful Humber sedan at a gas station,
probably about to be driven off to their doom!)

I think it may be interesting to hear your other stories on how you got
hooked on Sunbeams, so please post away if you'd like.

Anyway, the first time I picked up my now wife Jane (this was 26 or so
years ago, mind you), I drove up in my British Racing Green 1967 Alpine
V. I was very proud of that car and had of course really polished it up
for the big date. Jane took a look, walked around the car and said, and
this is an exact quote: "Sunbeam. Isn't that the same company that makes
mixmasters?". This was not a good start to the evening but for some
reason I forgave her and we hit it off pretty well, despite her
transgression. My mother's first reaction to my Alpine was similar, and
equally insensitive to those of us with Sunbeamitis. She said, before
she saw the lettering on the back, "Hmmmm. It kind of sounds like a
kitchen blender". It has been 30 years and I have recently forgiven her
for her comments and we are speaking again!
