Hi,

the soup can lid will be coated on one (maybe both) side with something,
probably a polymer, which stops it from conducting electricity. Use
something else which is just steel or sand both sides of the soup lid to
remove the coating. BTW I would love to see the face of some later owner
as they dis-assemble the tach and say &%#(at)$% PO he's used a soup lid to
make this clip.

Anthony.

On another topic, ie driving time v repair time, or something will always
break once you fix whatever is wrong now. I've had the engine out this
year to replace the rear welsh plug, and I've installed the heater to keep
us warm this winter and now just bought a big V8 (380 cca) battery to get
the car started in our ~0 degrees celcius mornings. Everything in good
condition, then Sunday night it wouldn't start, the engne was spinning like
a top with the new battery, fuel pump pumping fuel, but no spark. Now this
never happens, it always starts if the engine turns over. But as it turns
out the Lucas electrics had gotten together, and after checking their
condition and finding it to be good with no chance of releasing their smoke
had said, "OK one of you guys is going to have to disconnect yourself." So
the low tension lead quietly slipped itself off the coil, while making sure
that it stayed right next to its clip. It took me about 15 minutes to find
this in the dark!

Reminds me of a friend who used to slip that wire off himself just before
he went to pick a girl up for a date so that when the car wouldn't start he
could pop open the bonnet and impress her with his mechanical prowess by
having the car running in seconds.
