Paul, it was a Thule bike rack and the frame is ABOVE the hardtop. The
front 1" square crossrail clamps on to the side hardtop gutters just
like a mormal roof rack and because the hardtop is not very long the
rear crossrail has a nylon sling about 2" wide which I slide under the
rear window surround.
 The sling does tend to deform the weatherstrip as you suggest but you
can always add extra padding.
I could take a few shots, scan them and put them on the Web Page if you
like - may take me a little while though.
