OH NO!

Well fellow Beamers, it has taken me a week to write this note.

My Series V threw a rod last Friday (at least that is what I think). I didn't
even have the courage to look at the car until last night. I did take off the
rocker cover and find all the valves seem to be ok. So now it seems like it
must be a rod, on number 3 I think. (Funny this is the same rod I threw in my
first Series V 19 years ago...) Anyway now the serious restoration begins.
Since I am in the middle of moving (taking a faculty position at Ohio Northern
University, Ada, OH) I really can't do much until late September or October.
Of course by then, the prime driving weather will be gone. So instead of just
fixing this problem, I am now ready to tackle the car...

In planning the project for this winter, (even bought a house in Lima with an
insulated garage!), I decided to have a bit of fun with the engine. Not as
much fun as Jarrid, but still I want to go a little more than a stock Alpine.
My question is what experiences have any of you had with different performance
upgrades to the 1725cc engine? Is reboring to 0.040 over worth it? Should I
go all the way to 1922cc? How about a better cam? Is Holbay the only place to
get a good cam? Also I want to have the head ported and polished (and replace
all the valves, guides, seats and springs, I only want to do this job once!) Is
there a recommended machine shop familiar with Alpine heads?

I am sure this is just the beginning of many many questions.

Thanks,

(p.s. Well Ramon, looks like I get to use those rod bolts sooner than I
expected!)
