The gas tank is a good suspect. I had a 72 Impala many years ago that kept
stopping for no apparent reason even while driving. The GM dealer started his
troubleshooting method of replacing one part at a time until he had no more
parts left. The car would die and wouldn't start again, but after it was towed
to the dealer it started easily. This happened 3 times. Eventually one of the
mechanics figured out that something was going on in the tank. He opened it up
and found a small piece of cloth floating around. It had been in there a long
time, but the problem started occuring after my wife ran over a curb and put a
small dent in the tank. Well the dent was right at the fuel outlet and
restricted the flow so when the cloth floated over to the fuel outlet it
blocked. When the tow truck tipped up the car to bring it to the dealer, the
cloth floated away from the outlet and let the car start again. So had I known,
whenever it stopped all I had to do was jack up the car, shake it a little and
get going again. Of course than I wouldn't have gotten to buy all those shiny
new parts under the hood!
