RE: Mirror replacement & Engine Run on

I sometimes get a couple of seconds of run-on when my 1966 Series V is
hot. Having the car tuned up didn't cure it although it seems slightly
better. My regular mechanic reckoned that it may be due to modern fuels
having slightly different properties to fuels thirty years ago (even
though it is still a 97 octane leaded fuel) and suggested installing a
valve to "quench" the carbs with air when the ignition is turned off (I
can't remember the details but presume it would work off the vacuum).
Does all this sound plausible? I am now experimenting with buying
different brands of fuel to see if that makes a difference but since a
tank lasts me a couple of months it'll be a while before I have any
results! Another problem which may be related to this is the fact that
when my Alpine is hot the idle speed sometimes rises from 800 to 1500
RPM but mysteriously goes back down to 800 when left to idle for about
20 seconds.
Any Ideas?
Paul...
