I now have the coolest Alpine in the valley...literally. With the
quad core radiator installed I can race up and down the freeways at 75 mph
on 100 degree days and stay right at 165 degrees. I built a temporary
shroud out of some flashing and I can now idle for 30 minutes on a hot day
without the temp going over 190.
I had tried water weters in the past, but they didn't make an
appreciable difference. My thermostat is new and is some kind of wide
mouth model that helps flow more water. My timing is advanced to engine
knock when lugging but not at speed or climbing hills and has been
confirmed by timing light to be advanced a little more than factory specs
at idle. I am positive that there is plenty of crud built up in the
motor. I bought the motor for $500 from a guy and dropped it into mine to
replace the blown up motor from the DPO. Compression is good, doesn't
burn any oil, and the motor pulls strong up to about 80 mph at which point
I chicken out because I don't need a speeding ticket, so I figure I'll
just keep driving it until I am forced to tear it down. At which time
I'll try and remove as much crud from the passages as possible.
I am going to get a spacer and see if moving the fan a little
closer to the radiator helps with airflow and allows me to get by without
the shroud. I may also try the yellow Ford fan that several people have
told me about.
Thanks for all the input. I don't know what I would do without
this list. I have no other place to extoll my successes or bitch about my
failures with my car. My wife just doesn't seem to understand...
