I just recently installed a reworked head and put the distributor in
without a timing light which is probably where the 15-20 degrees BTDC
came from. The engine had about 30,000 miles (re-built) when I bought it
and now it has around 60,000. The head had some bad water ports which
caused an overheating problem so I had it reworked. I did a compression
check when I bought it and all the pistons were around 130 PSI which
seemed fine to me. A mechanic friend of mine seems to think they used
the low compression pistons when they rebuilt the engine. I haven't
checked it yet since I installed the new head cause I need to break in
the new valves for an accurate reading. The timing chain was replaced
along with the distributor about 10,000 miles ago becuase of erratic
timing problems.

Here's a thought...when installing my carbs I used 20W50 motor oil in
the dampers cause the book says to use engine oil and that's the oil I
use in the engine. Could this cause it to run a little sluggish?
