Garbage Gas

After much agonising about what petrol to run in the Alpine I've finally
settled on a mixture of 4:1 91 Octane to Aviation Gas. Although strictly
illegal (even in not so smog conscious New Zealand) The increase in
performance and that beautiful grey exhaust needs to be seen to be
believed.

My countries recent switch to unleaded gas has been an absolute disaster
our unleaded "96 Octane" has an anti knock index that can't be
maintained from batch to batch(91.4-91.8) but is well below the 94 of
Americian Super Unleaded, has Aromatics of 48% and Benzene of 5%
compared with US fiqures of 27% and 1% respectively. With such high
aromatics older cars like ours are suffering badly with degeneration of
rubber fuel line parts and in some cases fires (to say nothing of what
the high % of benzene is doing to our long term risk of a raft of
cancers)

Given this garbage that our Goverment has dumped on us I have no
hesitation in bending the letter of the law a little to save my car-and
whats more a lot of the classic car owners in this country are
considering doing the same thing.

Karl
