Larry; it seems a shame to screw up your original dash via a wrong brand
gage. I may be wrong but...usually errors in gage readouts relate to either
the sender being sick or the constant voltage regulator (CV) beingout of
whack and feeding the wrong voltage to the units.
Before going further, get a known good sender installed and see what
happens, then if still seeing errors, install a known good CV unit.
I bet you will end up finding a problem someplace.
Also...clamping a thyristor onto the thermo housing does not seem like a
good way to read this problem.
Coolant coming out of the stat housing and into the top tank will not lose
more than 5-8 deg. by the time it gets into the top tank of the radiator.
Ref. some mail I posted on this temp problem a couple weeks ago, get a
"lab quality" thermometer into the top tank and note true temps, against
your dash unit readings !

Karl; frozen threaded fasteners of all types...sometimes penetrants like
liquid wrench or WD40 will soak through the corroded threads and allow a
release. Sometimes heat works but sometimes makes things even more dry (internally).
One product KNOWN to surpass all others on the market...is..CRC5-56.
They make many products in the CRC lineup but nothing matches their 5-56
pentrant which was the very first commercially sold "low surface tension"
chemical for getting into threaded joints. You may have to let it work for
hours or days but it usually does the job. Most factory and pro shops know
about this stuff and now the LIST does too. The CRC 5-56 is in fact used
by GM and Ford in all their mfr. plants. Likely used elsewhere as well.
About 6 years ago I actually saw some in a Buick parts dept with a Buick
label on the can. Perhaps this is still available.
I see it all over in auto parts stores and supermarkets.
