Steve,
Anthony is correct. There is a few black ground wires that jumps from
guage to guage. One should go to each guage and is mounted under one of
the spin type nuts at the back of each (except for some ammeters).
As far as wiring goes, I once made a bunch of photocopies of the wiring
diagrams for the car and enlarged them. I made a copy for each "system",
such as lights, ignition, overdrive, etc. Then I used different color
highlighters to bring out the wires for the various systems. It has been a
great tool for chasing down problems.
I would suspect that your front turnsignals do not have adequate ground -
and are somehow using the headlight circuit to find ground. So when the
headlights are on, the turnsignals can't find ground. I created a separate
ground for each of the front (and rear) turnsignals once and suggest you
might do the same.
