Seat Back Construction

Steve, I restored the cardboard/pressboard backing on my SV seats. They
were actually in pretty decent shape. It has been a while, so I'm not
exactly sure what you mean about where to bottoms meet. It is my
recollection that the bottom of the cardboard meets, but does not overlap
the metal plates on the bottom of the sides. I'll take a look tonight.

As an aside, I had a terrible time finding a suitable replacement
cardboard/pressboard. I ended up going to my local art supply store. They
had a thin sheet of cardboard and then and double sheet. Unfortunately the
thin was too thin and the double sheet was really too thick, but I went
with it anyway. I choose the thick one because the thin one would never
hold up to any use.

I steamed the edges to get it to curve. But, then that seemed to weaken
the cardboard where it was steamed, which really didn't recover when it
dried. So, I redid them using just a minimum of steam, and a lot of slowly
rubbing and bending the cardboard around the edge of the kitchen table.
The hardest part was trying to get the thicker cardboard to stay up against
the metal frame. I used the original pop rivet holes. If I had to do it
again I would have added additional holes.
