That would have been Steve with his Tiger at Monterey this summer.
HMSA runs the Monterey Historics, and has very lax rules.
Steve spun out at monterey this year, and will very likely NEVER
run without a rol bar again. May have a little something to do
with a required change of underwear after the race.
A closed car is one that uses the top sheetmetal of the car
as a load bearing member.
A hard top is not even vaguely an excuse for a roll bar, nor will
the windscreen suport the weight of the vehicle in the event of
a rollover. The bar is a minimum requirement in my book, and
if you start getting really brave with your driving, you may
consider a full roll cage.
Try the bar for fit with the rear hatch. You may be surprised that
you can still gain access to the boot. Ask around. I am pretty sure
that bars have been sold for the Alpine and tiger mk1 that would
allow the required clearance.
