Well, I for one, use a SAAB filter on my Alpine and my Cricket. The
original application for the Sunbeam filter included SAAB on the label, so I
did a little research. The SAAB part# 9144445 oil filter, as fitted to 4 cyl
SAABs, is a good filter for the Sunbeam. On a SAAB, it's placed sideways, so
the filter is anti-drainback. An added bonus is the reduced diameter, making
it easier to install and remove, and quick to fill at oil changes. The filter
is designed to take the abuses of a 2.3 litre intercooled turbo, so I have no
qualms in trusting it's filtering ability! As to the reduced size, I change
my oil every year or 2500 miles, whichever comes first, so I know I'm nowhere
NEAR the dirt capacity of ANY filter!
As for the other brands -
I'm in the parts trade, and happen to now work at a VW-SAAB dealer.
However, in the early to mid 80s, I worked in an auto parts store. Fram, at
that time, listed the PH16 for a Sunbeam, not the PH8. This was where I first
saw the SAAB listing on the box! A PH43 is similar, but has no drainback
provision. Indeed, the PH16 may not have it anymore, either! Since my stint
in the parts store, I have grown VERY disillusioned with most aftermarket
suppliers. For instance, VW has no less than FIVE part numbers for oil
filters, that are ALL replaced by ONE PH2870A Fram. To me, if the
manufacturer bothers to make and stock a different part number, there's GOTTA
be something different inside!!

..... now, if I could just find a substitute for the huge cannister filter on
my Humber....
