Thought the list might be interested in reading some info on oil filters
and which brand to use. I found this on the MGB list, for what it is
worth:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a '73 B with top mounted oil filter and have had a rough time as
well. I have tried Fram, Pennzoil,
Wix/Dana and Mann. Of all filters, the Mann is the ONLY one which
fulfills the promise of no drain back.
I have spent literally hours peering in to the holes in oil filters to
mmake sure they have a rubber diaphragm to stop drain
back. Many do but they DON'T WORK!
I am lucky because I have a local parts house that carries Mann.
If anyone out there has an MGB with a top mount filter, use ONLY the
Mann filter because every other one I have tried
causes clatter and slow oil pressure build on start up.
Slow oil pressure rise and the resulting clatter is a SURE sign that
engine wear is happening!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Mann filter which will fit on the MGB is the one that fits Volvo 2.1
and 2.3 litre fours. I have used Fram PH43 and
PH16 on both the Volvo and my 71BGT. Also used the PH16 on my '96 Dodge
Caravan with the 3.8 V6. Now using the
Mann filters I got from my Volvo dealer on both cars. Seems like a
perfect fit. The cannister is about 2cm shorter than the
Frams. Haven't actually fitted one to my B, but will be doing so in a
couple of weeks, if you want to wait that long for
confirmation!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Further to my thread on the Mann filter for top load MGB
applications, the number of the Mann filter is W917.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
There you have it. Any guys using Mann Filters on their Alpines out
there?
