H - HIGH COMPRESSION ENGINE
L - LHD EXPORT
U - ESTATE CAR (STATION WAGON/RANCH WAGON)
X - NON-STANDARD (probably means Sealed Beam Headlights)

The 1724 printed on the lh side of the block means it's a 1724 cc engine.
