The thing at the back actually is a mechanical fitting that allows a
3/4 box section of magnetic metal to be clamped physically against the
2 "spade" terminals, the nut in the stud holding this in place. A
single coil of wire is looped through this piece of metal. The wire is
in the (low voltage) ignition circiut. This forms a pulse transformer.
As the coil fires, is induces a signal into the tach (via this
transformer made from the loop, metal etc), and triggers the tach.
Really simpler than it sounds. If you are missing this bit, someone may
have one. Not too hard to make from a can (magnetic material not
aluminum (if you can see one). Check the IV/V diagram for the wiring.
