Sometimes the engine has to be tilted quite a ways back. I always remove the
oil filler tube from the valve cover to avoid any fouling.

I also loosen all of the motor mount bolts to try to take as much strain as
possible off the mounts.

Finally, as long as you're in there, always replace the throwout bearing.
   Also, if you use a dummy shaft to re-allign the clutch when reinstalling
(avail. f/Sunbeam Specialties), check the fit in the pilot bearing in the end
of the crankshaft. Even though the dummy shaft is plastic, its sized pretty
well and should give you a good idea if the bearing needs replacing.
